Dry, oh so Dry

I’ve heard now that it’s the driest it’s ever been in our state’s history and I sure do believe it.  We’ve had many fires from the high ‘n mostly dry storms that pass with high winds and deadly lightning.  It’s been a struggle even to keep our flowers and few vegetables from drying out.  I like to have a fresh bouquet every once in a while and the pansies have been allowing this to happen in spite of the heat.  I’m not sure why some of them are one tone while others (my personal favorite) are like this.  Outside of our garden only the hardy plants survive…even the puff balls seem a more sturdy variety than the norm but maybe that’s just me.  I’ve also noticed that the grasshopper population is coming along nicely though I surely don’t know how.  There have been plenty of treats for our salamander in this I guess we’re blessed.  Mosquitoes have seemed non existent fortunately.  The field in the back of our house is about as brown as brown can be at this point but that doesn’t seem to bother the thistles.  Most everything else is brown…it reminds me of a wheat field about ready for harvest.  I still don’t know what these flowers are…though their glory is fading they are still rather spectacular.  The puff balls are preparing to launch their seeds to the great unknown…I wonder if they will grow this year.  Well, I hope some of you are getting some heat relief if you’ve been struggling with it.  For now the heat here is as prickly as the thistles

  3. The Prohibition song....... How dry I am..... became the prairie theme song. Texas panhandle n area, last year had less then one inch of rain all year. That drought area pretty much covered the dust bowl era area. There have been dust storms. There have been some good showers around and there are patches of green here n there and some ponds filled up. There are also some good brown patches.

    1. Our patches are mostly shades of brown with occasional patches of the hardy local plants...a.k.a. weeds. Whatever the weather you're a breath of fresh air whenever you visit John, have a good day my friend.

  4. Hi Joe,

If only I could send you folks some of our rain, we have plenty of it. Weather seems to be unusual everywhere at the moment. I love the pansies, have some planted at what will soon be my home, as well as my daughters.

God Bless - Have a good weekend - Nita

    1. I actually found myself missing the weather of England and Ireland through the heat here...sadly not a thing I can do about it for now. Pansies seem to be a favorite of many people...had to beat, they're a classic!

well, 50 plus years. Do hope we finally get some kind of break sooner or later. The corn however is a big loss and our cherry crop is all done but about 3 % the news said. I fear a long hard winter for us all price wise..we all will feel it come Dec and Jan etc. Hope things cool down for you there. Take care

    1. That's how it seems to be my friend...flood or famine. We still have terrible heat ahead but we go to a cabin for a few days here soon...perhaps there will be relief there. Sorry about the conditions there, that is truly awful.

  8. Funny how the weeds or wildflowers always seem to thrive in hot dry, to drought conditions with or without the rain.
Like you we haven't had any rain for weeks, and infact we are in drought conditions here in Ontario, Canada. I have a funny feeling that it will cost us this Fall and Winter in the Grocery stores.

Loved looking at your photos Joe. I too love Pansies. They are hardy little flowers, and I love the ones with the little faces.
Take care and have a Blessed Sunday, Joe.

    1. I wonder what this will leave us with come fall and winter as well my friend. We just got back from the mountains and you're exactly right about the wild flowers...I wish all plants were that hardy.
