A Not so Great Escape

Our salamander made a not so great escape this week.  I think he must have received some ninja training in his life before we found him.  It’s surprising giving his rather profound coloring but let me say that when he doesn’t want to be found he can be very hard to find indeed!  We’ve all grown quite fond of his antics and little personality…not mention it looks like he’s always smiling.  He’s got life pretty good…missing the winter and being fed.  During the winter we get crickets from a local pet store and we feed them well too.  I often put them into a calcium and vitamin powder before feeding him so far he’s really thrived.  He now spends a lot of his time in his aquarium where he’s got a little log and some rocks he can hide in and…his very own pool!  The first picture there shows him thinking it’s past time he was fed again…this one shows him even leaving his pool to give me the ‘ol stare and smile routine to get another cricket!  Well, he has life good but he escaped and though we tore this house up one side and down another we couldn’t find him.  A couple days went by and I was beginning to think that we’d never see him again and then all of a sudden as quickly as he’d disappeared he showed up again!  We literally have no idea where he was but we are very glad to have him back.  We all get a huge kick out of him.

Our weather has taken somewhat of a downturn again with it being gloomy and cooler.  I smile at my own whining here since we’ve had far worse winters…last year in fact was just awful.  This year I really can’t complain.  The snow is now mostly goneand I can now walk without fear of ice that is almost completely gone from the streets and sidewalks.  Looking outside I could almost believe it was fall at this point.  I thought that the ice from the last storm would last until spring but it’s been too warm for that to be so now only a few snow islands remain.  For now Old Man Winter’s bench remains empty…and for that I’m very thankful indeed!

  3. Used to keep chameleons, fed them crickets also. Critters like that are very adaptable.

Sitting here watching the snow tumble out of the clouds, up t oabout 3 inches. Nice pretty white mantle.

    1. I always wanted a chameleon John! The cheapest ones at the pet store are 75 bucks a piece and require a little more in care then this fellow but I gotta say that could well be a future project for me. This guy is a local fellow and far more adapted to the cold...no lamp or heater required. Enjoy your snow my friend...are you going to get some pictures?

  5. My son and family had an iguana who when there was no company had the run of the house. Alas he got too big and then ill so they are pet free. It's really a good thing. They're much too busy for animals.

    1. Fortunately this character is not a reptile and doesn't require much more than a dish of water and a cricket to be happy...he's a Montana local so it doesn't take hardly any care. We had dogs and cats throughout the years that were a thousand times more effort than this little fellow.

He's eaten his cricket in the morning already and is ready to face another salamander day...me? Not so sure...it's been a very stressful end of the week and I don't see that ending quickly...well, at least we're warmer then usual right?

  9. Joe so hard to believe that something that COLOR could just vanish like that and not be found easily. I bet you will always wonder where he was hiding..what he did on his little get away. HAH!Glad too you don't have a little furry critter running around to capture him as ehhh..well I won't say it.. No snow here and I dont miss it a bit. No boots, no shoveling.. God is being nice for a break. I am sure this summer when we are overrun with BUGS..we won't be so happy though. Take care and have a great week. : )

    1. It is hard to believe Caroldee...he's a master of making himself get in the darndest places if you let him. I can imagine him being hard to see in the shadows of the yellow tall grass near the pond in our backyard but not in the house...yet he pulled it off somehow! You're right about having a cat or something...we had a friend that lost a chameleon to a cat...whew...that's a cool 70 bucks at least down the drain. Hopefully our salamander's friends near the pond will keep the bugs down this year!

  10. well thank heavens the salamander didn't make it outside.. then you would never have gotten him back. and no doubt he was hiding in plain view..when he was gone..its always the best place to hide in plain view..for one always seems to look over and under.. and I am sure he could see you as you were looking for him.. bet he laughed and laughed..
this winter is indeed strange..went for a drive the other day up to Farimont hot springs..its only like a half hour drive from here.. but was so amazed that it looked more like fall than winter.. our mountains barely have any snow.. not a good sign.. we are going to be in big trouble if the snow does not come soon..we so need the snow Joe..sad to say but ever so true.
its always nice to come in here and visit with you.. again happy that you got your little creature back.. and I hope you all have a wonderful day.. ~Hope

    1. It remains what's going to happen with the rest of the season...just too weird huh? We got quite a bit of snow today...not enough to amaze anyone from Montana but some none the less. I'm very glad to have our salamander back too...he's a real character...I'm thinking he's Montanan through and through.
